About 'Colloquium...'

'Colloquium' can be defined as 'a gathering or assembly for discussion'....  The purpose of 'Colloquium...' is to do just that: provide a forum for discussion concerning issues relating to gender contexts within the Church.

In our initial conversation for 2012, 'Colloquium: women, language, and worship in the Church of Scotland' we reflected upon the use, or non-use, of gender-inclusive language in worship contexts.  The conversation broadened out to encompass language used by and about women within the Church, women in ministry as both signs and tokens, and gender issues in ministry.  It is hoped to hold another discussion in mid-June 2013, with planning already in process with regard to a theme and speakers.

'Colloquium...' planning team:

The idea for setting up 'Colloquium...' emerged, appropriately enough, out of a series of conversations brought about by Dr Elizabeth Ursic, a visiting fellow at New College, currently on research leave from Mesa Community College in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr Ursic is a professor of Religious Studies at Mesa Community College holding an MDiv from Yale Divinity School and a PhD in Religious Studies from Arizona State University.  Her research focus is religion, gender and the arts.  She is a board member of the Arizona Interfaith Movement.
In addition to teaching, she enjoys hiking, international travel and playing piano and cello. She has recorded a CD, Unspoken Touch.

Arising from work done while on research leave, the conference forms part of a wider Religious Studies project examining women and religion in Britain.

Rev Dr Fran Henderson currently acts as Assistant Principal at the School of Divinity - New College, Edinburgh.  Specialising in theological hermeneutics, she is also an ordained minister in the Church of Scotland.

Nikki Macdonald is in the final stages of a PhD examining the performance of rituals of penance in Early Modern Scotland, 1560-1610, and is also a candidate for ministry with the Church of Scotland.
